Cased vs uncased coils

An evaporator coil is the cold coil that removes heat from indoor air; it sits on top of a furnace and uses the furnace's blower to move air. At this size you'll choose between a cased coil (in its own housing, easy to install) and an uncased coil (fits an existing plenum).

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a cased and uncased coil?

A cased coil comes in its own sheet-metal housing, ready to set on the furnace. An uncased coil is the bare coil, meant to slide into an existing plenum or custom housing. Cased is simpler; uncased fits tight or existing setups.

Does a coil need a furnace?

An evaporator coil relies on a furnace's blower to move air. If you don't have a furnace, you need an air handler instead, which includes its own blower.
