A 3 ton water-source heat pump provides 36,000 BTU for a substantial zone or a whole small home on a geothermal loop. It's a common size to explain how these systems actually work — and the loop type behind them is central to that.

A water-source heat pump has one water connection that serves both heating and cooling: in winter it pulls heat out of the loop water, and in summer it dumps heat into it. Closed loops (buried ground pipe or a building's boiler/tower loop) recirculate the same water; open loops draw from a well and return it. The loop type shapes efficiency, cost, and maintenance, and it's the foundation the 3 ton unit depends on.

It reverses its refrigerant cycle. In heating mode it extracts heat from the loop water; in cooling mode it rejects heat into it. The same water connection serves both, with the loop acting as the source or the sink.
A closed loop recirculates the same water through buried ground pipe or a building loop. An open loop draws water from a well and returns it. Closed loops are more common; open loops are simpler but depend on water quality and supply.
A large zone or a small whole home on a geothermal loop — around 36,000 BTU of capacity, subject to loop temperature and flow.
Both can be very efficient when designed well. Closed ground loops offer stable temperatures; open loops can be efficient where clean well water is plentiful. The right choice depends on your site.
