1.5 Ton Air Conditioner
Goodman Single-Stage, R-32 | GLXS3BN1810
Central air conditioners cool your home by moving heat outside, and choosing one comes down to two things: the right capacity for your space and the right type for your ductwork. Browse split-system units by tonnage, or ductless mini-splits for rooms and additions without ducts.

Start with capacity. Air conditioners are sized in tons — one ton equals 12,000 BTU/h of cooling — and bigger isn't better: an oversized unit short-cycles and leaves humidity behind, while an undersized one runs nonstop on hot days. A Manual J load calculation sizes it properly, but as a rough guide most homes land between 1.5 and 5 tons.
Then match the type and components to your home:

It depends on your home's cooling load, not just square footage. Most homes use 1.5 to 5 tons; a Manual J calculation that accounts for climate, insulation, windows, and layout is the accurate way to size it.
A split system uses an outdoor condenser and an indoor coil connected to ductwork — the standard for whole-home cooling. A ductless mini-split skips the ducts and is ideal for individual rooms, additions, or homes without a duct system.
Higher SEER2 means better efficiency. Current federal minimums run about 13.4–15.2 depending on region; premium units go well above that. The right choice balances upfront cost against how long you'll keep the home.
Yes, in most cases. A new condenser should be paired with a matching coil or air handler so the system reaches its rated efficiency — mixing old and new components hurts performance and can void the warranty.
No — an AC only cools. If you want a single system that both heats and cools, look at heat pumps instead.
