Refrigerant from the outdoor unit enters the evaporator coil and expands, making the coil cold; the furnace blower pushes warm indoor air across it, and the coil absorbs the heat, cooling the air and wringing out humidity. A metering device (often a TXV) controls refrigerant flow for efficient operation.

It's the cold coil that removes heat and humidity from indoor air. Refrigerant makes it cold, the blower moves air across it, and the coil absorbs the heat — sending cooled, drier air into your ducts.
A thermostatic expansion valve — a metering device that regulates refrigerant flow into the coil for efficient operation across conditions. Many modern coils include one.
