3 Ton Heat Pump
Goodman Up to 15.2 SEER2 Single-Stage, Classic, R-32 | GLZS4BA3610
A 3 ton heat pump delivers 36,000 BTU of heating and cooling and suits most homes in the 1,500 to 1,800 square foot range. It's the size where a lot of buyers first weigh switching from a separate AC and furnace to a single heat-pump system — so it helps to understand how the heating side works.

Instead of burning fuel, a heat pump moves existing heat from the outdoor air into your home — surprisingly effective even in cold weather, though its output drops as temperatures fall. That's why most installs pair a 3 ton heat pump with auxiliary heat (an electric strip in the air handler) that kicks in on the coldest days or during defrost. The thermostat manages the handoff automatically.
Thinking about a 3 ton heat pump instead of AC-plus-furnace? We'll help you compare →
It moves heat that already exists in the outdoor air into your home using a refrigerant cycle — the same process as cooling, run in reverse. Modern units do this efficiently even in cold weather, though capacity drops as it gets colder.
In most climates, yes. An electric heat strip in the air handler provides backup heat on the coldest days and during defrost. The thermostat switches it on automatically only when needed.
In cold, damp weather, frost can build on the outdoor coil. The heat pump briefly reverses to melt it, then resumes heating. You may notice steam off the outdoor unit and a short pause in warm air — both are normal.
About 1,500–1,800 sq ft in a typical home, subject to climate and insulation and a proper load calculation for both heating and cooling.
Often, yes — it does both jobs in one system. In cold climates, pairing it with auxiliary or dual-fuel backup heat ensures comfort on the coldest days.
