5 Ton Air Conditioner
Goodman Single-Stage, R-32 | GLXS3BN6010
At 60,000 BTU, a 5 ton air conditioner is the largest standard residential split system, sized for big homes up to roughly 2,400 to 3,000 square feet. Once a home needs this much cooling, the real question is often whether one system is the right approach at all.

A single 5 ton unit can cool a large home, but pushing that much air from one system through a sprawling or multi-story floor plan can leave some rooms comfortable and others not. Many large homes do better with zoning — or two smaller systems — than with one maxed-out 5 ton. If you do run a single 5 ton, airflow becomes critical: the ducts and blower have to move a lot of air, and a variable-speed or two-stage compressor helps the unit hold steady temperatures instead of blasting and stopping.
Cooling a large home? We'll help you decide between one 5 ton unit and zoning →
A single 5 ton system can cool up to ~3,000 sq ft, but large or multi-story homes often stay more comfortable with zoning or two smaller systems, which distribute air more evenly than one maxed-out unit.
Roughly 2,400–3,000 sq ft in a typical home — it's the largest standard residential split-system size.
It can be. Oversizing causes short-cycling and poor humidity control. Confirm the load with a Manual J calculation before buying the largest size — many homes that feel like they need 5 tons actually need less plus better airflow.
A lot of airflow. Ducts and returns must be sized to move the CFM a 5 ton produces; undersized ducts restrict the unit and leave far rooms warm regardless of capacity.
In a large home, generally yes. Longer, lower-output cycles even out temperatures across floors and remove more humidity than a single-stage unit that runs full-blast and shuts off.
