If you have a furnace, you need an evaporator coil that mounts on it and uses its blower. Without a furnace (or with a heat pump), you need an air handler, which has its own blower.
A cased coil comes in its own housing, ready to set on the furnace; an uncased coil is the bare coil for an existing plenum or custom housing.
